چکیده
A baseflow survey of 41 tributary creeks investigated the tiansport of alrazine, nilrate-nitrom chloride and sulfate in two 5,000 ha Jasper County, Iowa watersbeds. The waterskds comprise a long-tam paired shldy to evaluate the effects of largesale conversion of row nop to prairie in Walnut creek watershed compared to highly agricultural Squaw creek watershed. Discharge and chemical concentrations measured at subwabmhed wtlets were used to asses chemical losses. Streamnow varied considerably among subwaterskis but was found to be SignifcanUy related w0.05) to the amount of alluvial soils present in drainage areas. Two methods were. used to estimaGe basenow from riparian conidors where discharge could not be directly measured: 1) a watershed flow budget; and 2) a regtwion equation related to the amount of alluvial soils present DitFuse groundwater discharge along major tributary corridors was found to be the mejor source of Streamnow and pollutant loading in both watersheds. Concentrations of atrazine (<0.05 to 0.24 @), nitrate (a.05 to 14 a) and chloride (6.2 to 34 mgL) varied but were highest in water draining pdominautly row crop atas. Baseflow from restored prairie subwatersbeds contained low concentrations of ag-pllutauts. M e restoration wncentrated in the riparian corridor of the Walnut Creek watefihed has produced a different pollutant-loading paaem compared to Squaw Creek. In Walnut creek watershed, nibate losses occurred priowily in k d v a t e r drainages dominated by row crop. Nitrate concentrations demased downsbeam as baseflow from restored prairie areas diluted stream nitrate concentrations. Nitrate concentrations in Squaw C m k incrpased dawnstream as basenow containing elevated nitrate concentrations discharged from riparian row crop areas. KEY TERMS: riparian corridor, prairie restoremion, nim-nitrogen, pes!i&b, basenow In Squaw Creek, no differenoes in nitrate losses were observed among subwatersheds.

Shrimp Culture Impact on the Surface and Ground Water of Bangladesh
A case study was carried out to see the impacts of shrimp culture on the surface (pond) and ground water (tube-well) quality in three coastal sub-districts of Bagherhat Sadar, Rampal and Morrelganj of Bangladesh. The people of Rampal (100%), Morrelgonj (87.5%) and Bagherhat (75.5%) expressed that salinity of both surface and ground water increased after shrimp culture, and water becomes more tu...
متن کاملStudy of the snowmelt effects on surface and ground water in the Bahar basin using remote sensing data
According to recent Studies, about 60 percent of surface waters and 57 Percent ground waters are located in snowy zones in Iran. In most areas of northern hemisphere and alpine environment areas, snow melt lead to the maximum instantaneous flow rate and is an important part of annual discharge. The present study investigated the effect of snowmelt on the surface waters and ground waters in B...

A research plan was developed to evaluate the occurrence of enteroviruses, giardia cysts and cryptosporidium oocysts in thirty-five different sites in the city of Mashhad, Iran. The occurrence of these pathogenic microorganisms was evaluated to investigate a possible health risk in the communities. For the detection of enteroviruses in water samples, the conventional method of cell culture...
متن کاملDetermination of ground water quality associated with lignite mining in arid climate
Ground water and surface water create a range of problems in lignite mining utilizing surface mining methods. In order to create a safe and economic mining environment, it is essential to carry out mining after dewatering the rock mass surrounding the lignite mines by advance dewatering techniques. This paper briefly describes the ground water regimes including pressure gradients associated wit...
متن کاملChemical and microbiological analysis of surface and ground drinking water quality
Drinking water has received considerable attention recently. However, misuse and mismanagement have resulted in a rapid and widespread decline in source-water quality and supply. Water quality guidelines can be used to identify constituents of concern in water, to determine the levels to which the constituents of water must be treated for drinking purposes. Membrane technology for the water cyc...

GSFLOW is a new U.S. Geological Survey model for simulating ground-water/surface-water interactions. GSFLOW couples PRMS (the Precipitation Runoff Modeling System) to MODFLOW (the Modular Ground-Water Model) with modules for simulating flow and storage in unsaturated-zones, lakes, and streams. GSFLOW simulates infiltration, runoff generation, and lateral flow in temporarily saturated material (...
